Logistics Management

Discover how effective logistics management drives your organisation's success

What is Logistics Management?

Logistics management is the process of planning, coordinating, and overseeing the movement of goods and information from their source to their destination. CIPS defines it as the "flow of goods and information between source and destination. It involves information, material handling, production, packaging, inventory, transportation, warehousing, and security."

Logistics management ensures that products move smoothly through each stage—from production to delivery—meeting customer needs efficiently and on time. This includes managing information, handling materials, organising production, packaging products, tracking inventory, and arranging transportation and warehousing. Security is also a key aspect to protect goods during transport. The primary objective of logistics management is to ensure that goods reach the right place at the right time in the most cost-effective way.

How is it related to Supply Chain Management?

Logistics is an important part of supply chain management (SCM). While SCM focuses on managing all the steps needed to make and deliver goods—from getting raw materials to keeping customers happy—logistics deals with the movement of goods and information.

Logistics handles things like transport, warehousing, packaging, and inventory. It helps SCM by ensuring products and materials move smoothly through the supply chain. For example, logistics ensures raw materials reach factories on time and that finished goods are delivered to customers when they expect them. Meanwhile, SCM looks at the bigger picture, such as building good relationships with suppliers and planning how the supply chain should work.

Key Differences:

  • Logistics: Focuses on daily tasks, like moving and storing goods.
  • SCM: Focuses on planning and improving the entire supply chain, including supplier partnerships and predicting customer needs.

Logistics and SCM ensure products are delivered efficiently, on time, and at the right cost. Logistics acts as the foundation for successful supply chain operations.

Different Types of Logistics Management

Logistics management has several specialised types, each focusing on different parts of the supply chain. Here are the six main types:

Inbound Logistics

Inbound logistics involves managing the transportation, storage, and receiving of goods and materials coming into a business. This includes sourcing raw

materials, handling supplier relationships, and ensuring that all materials arrive on time and in good condition for production.

Outbound Logistics

Outbound logistics manages the flow of finished products from the company to the end customer. It includes packing, warehousing, and distributing goods directly to retailers or customers. The focus is on timely delivery, meeting customer demand, and ensuring quality.

Reverse Logistics

Reverse logistics involves moving goods back through the supply chain, often from customers to the company. This includes handling returns, recycling, and disposing of products. Reverse logistics is important for customer service and sustainability, as it helps recover value from returned products.

Third-Party Logistics (3PL)

Third-party logistics involves outsourcing some or all logistics functions to a specialised external company. 3PL providers handle transportation, warehousing, and distribution, allowing businesses to focus on their core operations while improving logistics efficiency.

Distribution logistics focuses on moving goods within the distribution network to ensure they are available where needed, whether in warehouses, stores, or regional hubs. This type optimises stock levels, transportation routes, and delivery times to meet customer needs efficiently.

Procurement Logistics

Procurement logistics involves sourcing and buying the materials needed for production. This type ensures a smooth supply of resources by managing supplier relationships, handling orders, and controlling costs, which helps keep production flowing without interruptions.

Each type of logistics management plays a unique role in the overall supply chain, working together to ensure that goods move efficiently from the source to the end customer.
